DR. WENDY COHEN JOINS STAFF OF ARCH ORTHODONTICS
Trained at Harvard School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Wendy Cohen, DMD, has been named the newest Orthodontic Associate at ARCH Orthodontics which operates seven offices south of Boston.

The announcement was made by ARCH founder Dr. Robert Chavez, who said, “We are delighted and excited to be able to bring to our patients the high level clinical skills and experience that Dr. Cohen has fine-tuned over the past several years while working with patients of all ages to help improve their oral health, their smiles and their self-confidence.  Her dedication to our profession, to her patients and the community are in concert with our history of ‘creating generations of beautiful smiles.’”

Asked about her choice of profession, Dr. Cohen said, I have always noticed a person's smile - whether it was during my travels to foreign places or near home.  A nice, friendly smile always makes me feel welcome.  And to watch how an improved smile transforms a person's confidence is overwhelming.  It affects their everyday lives on both a personal and professional level.  It is an honor to be able to help so many people of all ages improve their smile.

“Orthodontics is a blend of science and art in the most perfect way.  We look at the face and its proportions in all directions and then move teeth using the laws of physics.  It’s always exciting when a patient has his/her braces taken off at the end of treatment and he/she can't stop looking in the mirror!” she added.

Dr. Cohen earned her B.S. in Biology magna cum laude  from Tufts University. While enrolled in the DMD Program at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, she earned two prestigious scholarships. She volunteered and became Co-Director of Operation Mouthguard, implementing an age-appropriate curriculum on oral health and oral hygiene. In 2008 she earned her DMD degree with Honors in research.

Dr. Cohen has volunteered with Give Kids A Smile, providing oral exams and oral hygiene instructions to children at no cost.  At Harvard Dental School, Dr. Cohen served on two key committees and worked as an Orthodontic Assistant in the School’s Faculty Practice from 2006-2008. This year, following an intensive three-year program,  she received her Certificate in Orthodontics and Post-Doctoral Master of Medical Sciences (MMSc) in Oral Biology.

In the world of research, after graduation from Tufts, she worked first as a lab technician at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Molecular Neuro-Oncology and at the Dana Farber / Harvard Cancer Center Neuro-Oncology Core.  During 2002, after receiving the Paul Dudley White Traveling Fellowship from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Cohen participated in an intensive basic research project at the University of Helsinki, Finland. During 2009-11, she performed research at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s Department of Developmental Biology where she developed and presented a National Institutes of Health proposal.  She has authored / co-authored several  articles based on her research.

Dr. Cohen has volunteered at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged in Boston. Last April, she received funding from Harvard University and traveled to India where she did dental work in an orphanage in India.   She worked part-time as a General Dentist in Newton for the past three years.

Her hobbies include painting, ceramics, fly-fishing and jogging, and she enjoys spending time with family, friends and pets.

LOCAL WOMAN BRINGS ORAL HYGIENE AID TO REMOTE HONDURAS VILLAGE
(Issued WINTER 2011-12)  -- This past year Rebecca Horne of Attleboro, Mass., Certified Dental Assistant at ARCH Orthodontics based in Stoughton (Mass.), joined a team of volunteers who provided dental care and oral hygiene education to children in a disadvantaged village in Honduras as part of the Cape CARES project. A primary goal of the program is to educate children about the importance of dental health to help reduce the number of decayed, painful teeth as well as other dental issues.

Rebecca’s team spent most of their time in Danli east of Tegucigalpa, the capital city.  The team included a dentist, hygienist, dental assistant, translator, and three general support personnel. She explains, “We spent a week in a school providing dental care to 113 students ages 4-18.  The team did fillings, extractions, cleanings, and sealants.  We learned that 60-70% of the students had never been to a dentist prior to Cape CARES visit.”  David Jacobs, the team dentist and a Cape CARES Co-President, hopes the project can continue.

Cape CARES (http://www.capecares.com/) sends similar teams 8-10 times each year, providing free medical and dental services in remote locations where there is no access to ongoing dental and medical treatment.  Each team spends one week at a site and can treat up to 700 individuals. Rebecca says, “Over the course of a year, we send three teams to each of our sites so we’re able to offer more effective follow-up care.”

Dr. Robert Chavez of ARCH Orthodontics says Rebecca is typical of his staff who are thoughtful, sensitive individuals who take pride in their work, whether in one of his seven offices or thousands of miles away in a remote village."

Rebecca adds, “Members of the teams are from all walks of life but with one shared purpose:  We offer friendship and develop a bond with the people in the villages we visit. Sometimes a smile or a hand on the shoulder of a sick or frightened person is the best way to show that we care. “

ARCH Orthodontics has a long history of community service. Recently staff members volunteered at the Massasoit College community health day. A few months ago, the practice donated a supply of toothbrushes for an oral hygiene project in a remote Ugandan village. Also, Dr. Robert Chavez and Dr. Andrew Chase have long been active in Operation Smile  that helps disadvantaged children with cleft palate and other oral deformities by providing them with free surgeries and dental care that they may not otherwise receive.

CPR TRAINING FOR ORTHODONTIC STAFF
CPR CERTIFIED  – Staff members from all seven offices of ARCH Orthodontics recently received training and certification in CPR. Shown (kneeling at right) is Dr. Andrew Chase examining an automated external defibrillator (AED). This portable electronicdevice automatically diagnoses the potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and applies electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia. This allows the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. The trainer was Dave Clifton (standing at right), retired Sharon Parks and Recreation Director. Certified by the American Heart Association. Clifton, who regularly gives this special Healthcare Provider Course for medical and public safety professionals, also trains officers at the State Police Academy. He said everyone should learn CPR, noting that “CPR saves thousands of lives a year.” 94% of people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest die before reaching a hospital. Dr. Robert Chavez of ARCH Orthodontics said, “We prepare and practice to handle all contingencies and emergencies.”
