How Will I Know if My Child Needs Braces?

pediatric orthodonticsSometimes it seems as though everyone has braces and it brings up the question, “Will my child need braces, too?” By bringing your child to the pediatric dentist at a young age, they will be able to detect early signs of orthodontic problems and can help with future treatment. By keeping an eye out for these signs and symptoms, you’ll be able to stay on top of your child’s orthodontic health!

Early Signs & Symptoms

While some children experience orthodontic problems, others will not. And depending on your child, the problems can arise at different ages. By taking them to the dentist regularly, you’re able to not only improve their dental health, but also catch any signs of orthodontic problems as early as possible.

  • Losing teeth early, late, or irregularly
  • Pain or trouble chewing and/or biting
  • Crowed or blocked teeth
  • A shifting or noisy jaw
  • Teeth that don’t align or touch

Crowded Teeth

The most common reason a child needs braces is overcrowded teeth. If you’re not sure if your child’s teeth are overcrowded, look at their teeth to see if there are signs of cramping or lack of space. By tackling crowded teeth early, the better. Left untreated, overcrowding can become worse as they age and it can lead to teeth decay, bad breath, and gum disease.

Abnormal Bites

There are four different types of abnormal bites: overbite, under-bite, cross-bite, and open-bite. Depending on which type of bite your child has will effect the treatment, but typically traditional metal braces are the best solution.
